G7 - Training and Exercises

G7 is in charge of the overall HQ EC training & exercise policy and oversees the programming, budgeting, coordination, conduct and evaluation of the major collective training activities and exercises, including HQ internal staff training.

The branch consists of an administrative office and three sections.

The admin personnel supports the branch in all administrative tasks, establishes contact with all other branches of HQ EC, prepares meetings as well as training activities as far as organizational tasks are concerned.

The training section is responsible for the whole spectrum of individual staff training, which covers the newcomers training as well as advanced and specialized training in preparation of EC exercises, or the coordination of courses required to improve the qualifications of staff members. When the section is fully manned, the spectrum will also include training on Command & Control Systems (e.g. SICF = Système d’Information et de Commandement Français), the preparation of EC Fact Finding Teams, training on the exercises’ animation tool called “Joint Exercise Management Module (JEMM)”, and the administration of all courses at NATO School in OBERAMMERGAU (GERMANY), at NATO Communication and Information Systems School in LATINA (ITALY), and at the European Union Defence and Security College.

The exercise section develops and updates the HQ EC directive and policy on all military exercises matters. It is responsible for planning, preparation, coordination and organizing all EC major exercises. In order to meet the requirements for an HQ ready to lead multinational operations, EC conducts one major exercise per year. The exercise cycle usually starts with an internal Command Post Training I, followed by a second Command Post Training II with augmentees from different Nations, HQ’s and units who will participate in the main exercise. The exercise scenario could refer to a NATO as well as an EU mission, depending on the desired outcome.

In addition the section is responsible for the management of EC training and exercise related funds from the annual multinational budget.

When fully manned, the lessons learned section will be responsible for the organization of the exercise evaluation analysis, reporting and implementation process.

It is responsible for the coordination of NATO Combat Readiness Evaluation (CREVAL) and the NRF certification of HQ EC when required.
