Zaragoza, Spain. Exactly twenty-three years ago, on 8 June 2003, Polish citizens voted in a historic referendum on their country`s future. More than 77 percent of the citizens supported joining the European Union, paving the way for Poland´s accession on 1 May 2004.
Today, on the San Gregorio Training Area in Spain, that decision has a very tangible dimension.
Inside the multinational Force Headquarters of Eurocorps supporting MILEX26, Polish Captain Dominik works alongside soldiers and officers from across Europe in Cyberspace Operations. As part of the headquarters staff, he contributes to one of the European Union’s most important military exercises and the validation of the Rapid Deployment Capacity (RDC).
For the young Polish officer, working in a multinational headquarters is both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful.
“As a Polish and European citizen, I love working with people from different countries here at Eurocorps. I am proud to be part of something special.”
His daily work reflects how modern military cooperation has evolved. Today’s challenges in Cyberspace operations do not stop at national borders and require nations to coordinate, communicate and work together more closely than ever before.
Captain Dominik has already participated in several multinational training activities and preparation phases before arriving at MILEX26. Those experiences have helped him understand the complexity of multinational cooperation and prepared him for his role within the headquarters.
But for Captain Dominik, the real strength of Eurocorps lies in its people.
“It is always interesting to see how different nations approach the same challenge. Everyone brings unique experiences and perspectives. Those differences make us stronger.”
That multinational spirit is at the heart of MILEX26. The exercise brings together forces, capabilities and expertise from across Europe to strengthen interoperability and demonstrate the readiness of the EU’s Rapid Deployment Capacity.
Poland’s place within Eurocorps reflects its own European journey. After becoming an Associated Nation in 2002, Poland became the sixth Framework Nation of Eurocorps in 2022, joining Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Spain in shaping the future of the multinational headquarters.
For Captain Dominik, this cooperation is no longer an abstract political idea. It is something he experiences every day, whether during planning meetings, discussions with international colleagues or while supporting a major multinational exercise.
And it is also something deeply personal.
Living and working in Strasbourg, meeting people from across Europe and serving in a multinational headquarters are experiences he values greatly. For him, they represent the opportunities, freedom and quality of life that European cooperation has helped create.
“I really enjoy life as a European citizen, my life in France and in whole Europe and the opportunities we have.”
Twenty-three years after Polish voters chose a European future, a young Polish officer now stands at the centre of a multinational team preparing Europe’s forces for tomorrow’s challenges. Here in Zaragoza, the result of that decision is visible every day: Europeans working together, learning from one another and strengthening the Rapid Deployment Capacity.
In many ways, Eurocorps exists to help safeguard exactly what Captain Dominik values most: the freedom, security and cooperation that allow Europeans to live, work and build their futures across borders.
