On 30 April, Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro, Commanding General of Eurocorps hosted an official visit from the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE), chaired by Mrs Marie-Agnes Dr. Strack-Zimmermann.
The delegation comprised by Members of the European Parliament (MoEP) from the SEDE Committee, accompanied by several representatives and political advisors from the European Parliament’s Directorate-General for External Policies.
The Headquarters presented its role, tasks, and operational capabilities, emphasizing its dual nature and its ability to operate under the mandates of both the European Union and NATO.
Visiting Eurocorps allows MoEPs to see how multinational command structures actually function in practice. They showed strong interest in the Eurocorps and engaged well with the military participants. The EU has been pushing for greater strategic autonomy and defence cooperation, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine while SEDE is focusing on initiatives such as the Strategic Compass, defence industrial policy, military mobility and rapid deployment capacity.
Eurocorps represents the broader political idea of a more united defence identity and has several times shown proof that they are capable, willing and ready.
