MILEX26 Concludes

MILEX26 successfully demonstrated the European Union’s ability to generate credible, rapidly deployable military readiness under realistic operational conditions. Concluding on 18 June 2026 at the San Gregorio Training Area in Zaragoza, Spain, the exercise marked the successful completion of the EU’s fourth Live Exercise in support of the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity (EU RDC).
Over nearly four weeks, approximately 2.500 soldiers from 13 Member States trained and operated under the command of the Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC). The exercise integrated all levels of command: MPCC in Brussels as military strategic Headquarters, Eurocorps as the deployed operational Force Headquarters, and the Spanish-led EU Battlegroup 2026 (EUBG26) at tactical level.
Spain, as host nation, provided essential operational infrastructure and training support at the San Gregorio Training Area, enabling complex multinational training under demanding conditions. The Spanish Armed Forces played a decisive role in ensuring the seamless execution of the exercise, reinforcing Spain’s continued commitment to European security and defence cooperation.
Portugal made a significant contribution to MILEX26, deploying forces over long distances, including from Madeira, and providing key leadership within the Force Headquarters through the Deputy Force Commander. The start of the exercise coincided with Portugal’s National Day, underlining the shared European commitment to collective defence, interoperability and unity of effort across national boundaries.
Operating under demanding climatic conditions, including sustained high summer temperatures, participating forces enhanced interoperability, validated procedures and generated key operational lessons. The exercise further integrated specialised capabilities, including a Romanian deployable laboratory element supporting force protection and operational awareness.
A key outcome of MILEX26 is the successful validation of the Spanish-led EU Battlegroup ahead of its standby period within the EU RDC from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, ensuring the European Union retains a continuously available and credible rapid response capability.
The exercise culminated in a Distinguished Visitors Day attended by senior military leaders, government representatives and European Union stakeholders, who observed the capabilities developed throughout the training period.
Marking the 40th anniversary of Spain´s and Portugal´s accession to the European Union, MILEX26 highlighted the enduring importance of European cooperation, solidarity and collective security.
As participating units return to their home stations, MILEX26 leaves behind more than lessons learned. It demonstrated the credibility of the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity, strengthened multinational cooperation and confirmed the readiness of the Spanish-led EU Battlegroup for its forthcoming standby period.
